Antivirals
Antiviral medications are a class of drugs designed to combat viral infections by targeting various stages of the viral life cycle, inhibiting the virus's ability to reproduce and spread within the host. Unlike antibiotics, which are effective against bacteria, antivirals are tailored to combat specific viruses, such as influenza, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and herpes simplex virus.
Although antivirals may not always provide a complete cure for viral infections, they can significantly reduce the severity and duration of symptoms, lower the risk of complications, and, in some cases, prevent the onset of symptoms altogether. These medications work by interfering with viral replication, either by blocking the entry of the virus into host cells, inhibiting the synthesis of viral components, or preventing the release of new viral particles. As with any medication, following the prescribed dosage and duration is crucial to ensure the most effective treatment and minimize the potential for drug resistance.
